Stating that Railways will go through transformation in five years, Prabhu in his budget speech said, "We will increase track capacity by 10 per cent to 1.38 lakh km."
The Modi government's first Rail budget is down to earth, rather than larger than life. At the same time, it has ambition, has a clear idea on how to reach that aim, avoids populist give-aways and grandiose projects.
The only obstacles to those visions are the harsh realities of Indian realpolitik and organisations.
"The review will be completed soon so that we can announce new trains and increase frequency in this session," Prabhu said in his maiden rail budget speech.
Stating that his government can ensure the 're-birth of Indian Railways', Prabhu said, "I am convinced we can deliver. I believe we can ensure the rebirth of Indian Railways."
Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha, said that there will not be any increase in urea prices for farmers.
The operating ratio, a key measure of efficiency, was at 91.8 per cent in 2014-15 after touching a high of 93.6 per cent in the previous financial year.
Ahead of the Railway Budget, Suresh Prabhu had said that it will signal the direction of long-term reforms needed to revamp the world's fourth-largest rail network.
Rail Minister Suresh Prabhu also said that project delivery and resource mobilisation are key to ensuring better productivity of Railways.
