In India, The World's First Vegetarian City

IndiaDivine.org:
After Jain monks went on a hunger strike to push for a citywide ban on animal slaughter, the local government declared Palitana a meat-free zone. But the city's Muslims are not happy. Jainism is one of the oldest religions in the world and preaches a path of non-violence towards all living beings. In India, about 5 million people practice it.

Current community project of IndiaDivine.org and the Bhaktivedanta Ashram. If you enjoy these articles please consider helping this good cause:
The forests around the Bhola Giri mountain range in Orissa have been sacred for thousands of years due to having been visited by Lord Ramachandra and the Pandavas, and as such sadhus have been residing throughout this area from ancient times. Over the last 10 years, devotees from the Bhaktivedanta Ashram have been meeting with and trying to help some of the present sadhus. In the past we have provided solar lighting to some ashrams, running water (through water tanks fed by gravity from a nearby waterfall), and constructed rooms for sadhus to stay as well as bathrooms and toilets for elderly sadhus.
