CORONAVIRUS UPDATES

Lockdown, Day 47: Homecoming

Sixty-four flights. Two naval ships. A dozen countries. And 15,000 stranded Indians. Yesterday, the subcontinent began one of the biggest evacuation exercises in the world - the Vande Bharat Mission.

In another major move, the health ministry relaxed the norms for the discharge of COVID-19 positive patients. Now, people who show mild or moderate symptoms can be discharged from hospitals without the need for a test to confirm if they are COVID-19 negative or not; this move is expected to cut down on the use of test kits.

Debate This
Now debating: Should India consider home delivery of liquor?
When medical experts say liquor sales should be intelligently regulated, so that demand can be met and crowding avoided, governments should listen. Home delivery from shops and online purchases must be allowed immediately. It's baffling why most states are dithering on this, since they need the revenue. And as the experts said, regulated liquor sales could have continued through the lockdown, and we wouldn't have been seeing crowds, lathicharge and panicky open-then-shut orders.
